Integration of environment and sustainable development into teacher training programs of universities

From April 2014 to February 2015 a training program for university educators was carried out by Tartu University. The aim of the training program was to raise awareness and impart knowledge on how to integrate topics of environment and sustainable development into teacher training programs in universities.
The national curriculum defines a cross curricula theme "Environment and sustainable development" and this current training program was aimed to develop the awareness of university educators who are responsible in universities for teacher training programs. Also the aim of this program was to develop the skills to realise and critically evaluate the information in relation to the environment and sustainable development.
Professional Development Approach
The training program involved 60 university educators. The training program consisted of 78 hours work in contact with instructors and homework. Every participant of the training program had to prepare curricula or part of it which demonstrated how the participant would include topics of environment and sustainable development into their work.
